Assignment by Value. If a variable is assigned to another variable holding a simple numberic value, string, boolean or similar primitive a new copy of value is created and stored at that address. This is called assignment by value.

Variables are stored at an address in computer memory. Initial values can remain undefined or point to null.

How variable assignment by value works in JavaScript

Assignment by Reference. If the assigned value is an object it is assigned by reference -- the object is not copied.

            let a = obj;

The variable becomes a reference to the memory address at which the original object was stored. Making a change to that reference, changes properties in the original object too.

How assignmening a value by reference works in JavaScript

A variable can be defined using var, let or const keywords. This determines what scope it will be visible in and whether its value can be changed.

var a = 1; // Legacy ("hoisted" to global scope)

Variables defined using the var keyword are hoisted and will be available in global scope. They are considered legacy and should not be relied upon when writing modular JavaScript code.

Variables defined using let are avaialble in your program only in the scope in which they were defined. The same is true of const, but the value of const cannot be changed once it's been already defined.

            const PI = 3.141592653589;
            PI = 10;// Error: cannot change value of const

The exception from the rule is when const is assigned to an object. In which case you can still change the value of any property in that object:
